Instructor: Stephen Saxenian.
The aim of this workshop is to introduce methods of incorporating anatomical structure into representational figure drawings. Using physical and 3D models, master drawings and live models, we will focus primarily on the skeletal forms, and to a lesser extent the muscular forms, of the torso, learning how to identify them on the model and how to draw them as simplified geometric shapes and elements. Attention will also be paid to drawing fundamentals such as analyzing a pose, drawing with perspective, blocking in and comparative and relational measuring to establish sound proportions.
Drawing the figure is a wonderfully rich lifelong endeavor. An understanding of the anatomy and structure of the human body deepens the figurative artist’s practice, providing tools to plan and construct a drawing based not only on what is observed but also on what is known. This workshop will be best suited to students who have prior experience drawing the figure.
