Join landscape painter Loretta Medeiros for a small-size painting workshop. Here’s your opportunity to study with a National Award Winner!

Always wanted to try plein air painting but didn’t know how to start. This class is for beginner to intermediate painter. Loretta will share her enthusiasm for Plein Air painting with you. She will walk you through what you need to go out plein air painting including equipment. Instruction will focus on how to create a good composition when outdoors, the use of colors, values and lights. Lecture starts inside, and then we will move to Frinside and go outside
Materials list:

Plein Air recommended Supply List

All Please dress appropriately –  I recommend wearing a long sleeve shirt, long pants, socks and shoes.  Bring a hat to wear that has a visor.  Insect repellant and sun screen as we will be outdoors painting.  Do Not wear anything you are afraid to get paint on, just in case.  Also, bring water to drink especially if it is hot out and/or a container to carry water in if using a water based medium.  A chair and /or a TV tray table for watercolors if you do not have a watercolor field easel.  Rain date is July 14, 2019.  An easel, free standing adjustable is recommended  for Oil or Acrylic, No supplies provided.

Canvas or gesso board either 5” X 7” or  8” X 10”.

A Palette (approximately 9’ X12”)

A clip on umbrella (optional)

Cotton rag (undershirt/T-shirt cut in strips)

Paper towels and wash wipes.

An empty container or bag for any trash

Gamsol or orderless Turpenoid ONLY (only oil)

Cold Press Linseed Oil or Walnut Oil (Only oil)

2 metal palette cups (Only Oil)

Triangular shaped Palette Knife

Camera

Oil Brushes –  Bristle long handle brushes Filbert size 8, 6, 4 and 2

Sable or synthetic sable long handle brushes Filbert size 8, 6 & 4

(for oils)

 

Oil Paints –  Raw Umber

Burnt Sienna

Ultramarine Blue

Cobalt Blue

Viridian

Sap or Hookers Green

Alizarin Crimson

Cadmium Red Medium

Yellow Ochre

Cadmium Yellow Medium

Titanium White

Optional Paints – Burnt Umber, Cerulean Blue, Naples Yellow, and Cadmium Orange and Zinc White

DO NOT buy paints that say Hue.

Recommended paint brands – Utrech, Gamblin, Windsor Newton, Grumbacher, M. Grahm, or Old Holland

IMPORTANT: Please tone your canvas/gesso board with a Turpenoid wash with a mix of yellow ochre with a small amount of burnt sienna the night before class. For acrylic just a watered down version of Yellow Ochre with a touch of med red.

If using watercolors use good brushes such as dream catchers, sables, cheap Joes best water color brushes  Paints can be in the same colors as listed for oils and same brands but Rembrants are also good but DO NOT purchase Marie’s, Artist’s Loft or Reeves

Paper should be Fabriano or Archer and prefer 300 lb.  A backboard and masking tape to support your watercolor paper on cut to no larger than 11” X14” size. A cotton rag towel, paper towel, water, container for water, spray mist bottle and Kleenex.

Painting with Acrylics –
Recommended is Liquitex Basics 24 count set which can be obtained from Jerry’s Art O’Rama, Art Supply Warehouse, Cheap Joe’s (all on line) or at Michael’s (in the store), a set of flat Golden Talkon paint brushes (4-5 of them varying sizes) and a set of rounds Golden Talkon (4-5 varying sizes) paint brushes (can be obtained from Ocean State Job Lot),  canvas and/or canvas boards no larger than 8”X10” (at Ocean State Job Lot) , a  terry cloth Rag, a palette knife  Paper towels, Q-tips,  masking tape, a fine mist spray bottle for water, a plastic water container, a palette (can use a white Styrofoam plate or cleaned Styrofoam meat tray), a pencil, ruler and an eraser.  Do NOT buy Reeves, Artist’s Loft or Maria’s acrylic sets.  If you already have acrylics bring them to class. Must have acrylic colors are Titanium White, Ultramarine Blue, Cobalt Blue, Raw Umber, Burnt Sienna, Yellow Ochre (or Yellow Oxide),  Cadmium Yellow Light, Cadmium Yellow Medium, Alizarin Crimson (red), Cadmium Red Medium, and Sap or Hookers Green.
